Deosai is a place of scale and silence. At over 4,000 metres, the plateau stretches for dozens of kilometres, a treeless expanse of grass, rock, and sky that only becomes accessible for a few months each year. This short safari explores the national park by 4WD with easy day walks, making it accessible to almost anyone who wants to experience high-altitude wilderness without long trekking days. The route crosses the plateau from the Skardu side, visits Sheosar Lake, and returns via the picturesque Chilam Valley. Wildlife is a real highlight: Himalayan brown bears forage on the slopes in early summer, marmots whistle from their burrows, and birds of prey circle overhead. In July and August the plains turn purple and yellow with wildflowers, an unexpected softness in such a stark landscape. Nights are spent in a simple tented camp. The altitude is high but the pace is slow, and the focus is on watching, walking a little, and letting the emptiness of the place do its work.
