The Shigar Valley runs east from Skardu toward the Braldu and Biafo glaciers, a fertile corridor of villages, orchards, and old forts framed by bare Karakoram slopes. This relaxed tour uses a 4WD to link the valley’s cultural sites and best viewpoints, with short walks each day that anyone can manage. Highlights include Shigar Fort, a restored 17th-century palace that now operates as a heritage hotel; the Cold Desert, where wind-sculpted sand sits incongruously beneath snow peaks; and the Khilingrong Mosque, one of the oldest wooden mosques in Baltistan. There is also time to wander through apricot orchards, drink tea with families, and simply watch village life unfold.
